WooCommerce quantity discounts and bundles: three setups that work without coupons

A quantity ladder, mix and match and a free gift on a tier: when to use each, and the margin arithmetic to do first.

Discount coupons are a blunt tool for raising order value. They get shared on coupon sites, they need a code typed at the right moment, and the customer who was already going to buy one item rarely reaches for a second. A discount that lives in the cart itself, calculated from what is actually in it, does the job without any of that. Here are three setups that work, and when to use each.

1. The quantity ladder: buy more, save more

The simplest version: one unit at full price, two at 10% off, three at 15% off. The tiers are yours, set as a percentage or a fixed amount off, and the customer sees them as a small pricing table on the product page before touching the cart. It suits products people reasonably buy in multiples: consumables, refills, anything used up or gifted.

2. Mix and match: any three from this group

Here the discount applies to a group of products rather than one. You build the group by hand or by category, give it a shared ladder, and the customer picks any combination while a live total shows what they save. It suits ranges where people like to choose: apparel, accessories, sets of similar items.

Variable products work inside a mix group. Every item in the bundle gets its own colour and size choice, shown as swatches or dropdowns, and sold-out combinations are disabled, so a customer building a three-shirt bundle can pick black in medium, white in large and green in extra large without leaving the widget.

3. A free gift on a tier

Sometimes a percentage is the wrong reward. A highlighted strip such as + FREE sticker pack under the three-item row makes a tier feel like a prize, and you can optionally add a real gift product to the cart at zero price when the customer reaches it. A tier can carry a gift with no percentage discount at all, which protects your margin on the item itself.

Why “no coupon” is the important part

In Wexofy Bundles the discount is a cart line, labelled with wording you choose, and it is recalculated from the real cart contents every time the cart changes. That has practical consequences:

  • It stays correct if the customer removes an item, or adds one from a different page. The widget is a convenience, not a requirement.
  • There is no code to leak, share or mistype.
  • The customer sees the saving on the product page first, then again in the cart, and the two agree because they come from the same rules.

Do the margin arithmetic before you set the tiers

Take a product that sells for 100 and costs 60, so each unit earns 40. At 15% off, a unit sells for 85 and earns 25. Selling three at that price earns 75 in total, against 40 for one full-price sale. The ladder wins only if enough customers actually move from one unit to three. If your margin per unit is thin, a smaller discount, or a free gift instead of a percentage, is safer. Start with one modest tier and read the results before adding more.

Limits worth knowing

  • The same-product quantity ladder is for simple products. For products with colour and size options, use a mix-and-match group, where each item picks its own variation.
  • A group can be defined by category instead of a hand-picked list, which keeps large ranges easy to maintain.
  • Test the picker on a phone. Most bundle widgets are used there, and a layout that needs horizontal scrolling loses the sale.

Choosing between them

  • Customers buy the same item repeatedly: quantity ladder.
  • Customers like to choose several different items: mix and match.
  • You want a reward without discounting the price: a free gift on a tier.
  • You are unsure: start with a ladder of two tiers on your best seller and compare the average order value for a month.

All three run from one plugin, Wexofy Bundles, with as many groups as you need and design controls so the widget matches your theme.

Frequently asked questions

Do customers need a coupon code?
No. The discount is applied automatically from the cart contents.

Can each item in a bundle have its own colour and size?
Yes, in mix-and-match groups. Choices appear as swatches or dropdowns and sold-out variations cannot be selected.

Is the free gift really added to the cart?
Optionally. You can show only the highlighted strip, or also add a real gift product at zero price when the tier is reached.
